AIR PLANT CARE
Air Plant Care
A common misconception about air plants is that they don't need care. Unfortunately, this is not true. Although they require very little care compared to other plants, they still need attention. Originally, air plants can live only on moisture in the air, which justifies their name. They are very resistant plants, which require less care than most indoor plants. Its leaves have small, fine hairs, called trichomes, through which they can effectively absorb the necessary nutrients from the air. The humidity in their areas of origin is much higher than here, so air plants still need some care!
How to care for air plants?
- Regularly mist or soak your air plant. Specific details can be found below.
- Place your air plant in a well-lit location, preferably with good air circulation, as it needs to dry out after watering.
- Protect the air plant from frost at any time.
- Avoid direct exposure to sunlight (indirect light is best).
Air plant in open environment
In the warmer months, it is ideal to mist the air plant once or twice a week. During the colder months, it can be done once every two weeks. Prefer to use a spray specifically for air plants, such as Take Airplants Care Spray, which contains the appropriate fertilizers. If you don't have any, you can use water (preferably natural water, but hard water is also acceptable). The most important thing is that the air plants have time to dry completely. In addition to regular spraying, it is highly recommended to soak air plants once a month. Below you will find more information about the immersion method.
Open glass air plant
Care for air plants in open glass is basically the same as described above. However, it is highly recommended to remove the air plant from the glass after spraying. It is also important to let the plant dry completely before placing it back in the jar. Preferably use Take Airplants Care Spray, but it can also be done with water (natural is better than hard or tap water). To further improve plant health, you can apply the monthly soaking method, details of which are below. Remember to always let the plant dry completely before placing it back in the jar.
Air plant in closed environment/enclosed glass
Once or twice a week, mist your air plant with water or, preferably, with Take Airplants Care Spray (once or twice a week during the cooler months). After spraying, only place the plant back in the jar when it is completely dry. Because air plants value air circulation, they can deteriorate more quickly if they are kept in enclosed spaces, such as a closed glass enclosure. Therefore, it is important to monitor the appearance of the plant. If you notice that it starts to lose color or shows signs of weakening, we recommend that you apply the soaking method. This method is explained in detail below. After the immersion process, let the plant dry completely in an open environment, with good air circulation and indirect light (avoid direct sunlight). After soaking, the plant will regain its strong, healthy appearance and can be placed back in the jar. Whenever this deterioration process happens again, you can repeat the method.
Immersion Method
To keep your air plants even happier, it is recommended to soak them monthly in a bowl of water (preferably tap water, rather than hard water). The plants will absorb the water for some time. After 30-60 minutes of soaking, place the plants in a well-lit location with good air circulation to dry completely. You will see that the plant will once again look healthy and strong. The drying process is extremely important.
Below we have provided some images to help you visualize the immersion method.
